South Africa’s small business sector is facing yet another setback as the Democratic Alliance (DA) demands the urgent recommencement of the Small Business Ombud selection process. In a strongly worded statement issued by Henro Krüger MP, the DA has accused the ANC of manipulating the process to install a politically aligned candidate, undermining transparency and fairness. Here are the five key takeaways from the DA’s official release:
1. Selection Process Riddled with Irregularities
The DA revealed that the initial selection process for the Small Business Ombud was marred by procedural flaws and political interference. The ANC allegedly attempted to push through its preferred candidate, prompting the withdrawal of the committee report from Parliament on 5 June 2025. Since then, no further action has been taken by the Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Small Business Development.
2. Entrepreneurs Left Vulnerable
The DA emphasized that the delay in appointing an Ombud is a betrayal of millions of South African entrepreneurs. They say that small businesses continue to face harassment, delayed payments, and exploitation; often at the hands of both large corporations and government entities. Therefore, without a functioning Ombud, these businesses lack a formal avenue to seek justice and redress.
3. Call for an Independent and Resourced Ombud
The DA insists that the Ombud must be fully independent, well-resourced, and free from political influence. They say that the office is not just a dispute resolution mechanism. It’s a cornerstone for economic justice, job creation, and inclusive growth. Therefore, a credible Ombud could unlock billions in unpaid invoices, reduce legal costs, and restore trust in business relationships.
4. DA’s Longstanding Advocacy
The DA has championed the establishment of a Small Business Ombud since the 5th Parliament. Their economic policy platform, “Plan to Turbocharge the Economy,” includes measures to cut red tape, exempt SMMEs from restrictive bargaining council agreements, and implement reforms that empower entrepreneurs. The Ombud is central to this vision.
5. Urgent Call to Action
The DA has formally written to the Chairperson demanding the selection process be restarted immediately. They argue that South Africa cannot afford a compromised appointment and that entrepreneurs deserve an Ombud with integrity, expertise, and independence.
