Every time I do an impactful yet young hearted Q&A, I become so rejuvenated. Marcia Monareng’s story is heavy. Putting retrenchment and COVID in the same sentence is traumatic. But this Q&A is not a sad story, it is a story of overcoming and becoming. Marcia is a soldier and you can feel her resilience in this Q&A. Here we go:
Sibusiso Nkosi: Take us back to the day when you decided to start Millennial Mindset Media. What was happening in your world, even weeks leading up to that?
Marcia Monareng: I started Millennial Mindset Media after being retrenched during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was one of those moments where everything felt uncertain in terms of income, purpose, direction. I had no backup plan, just this loud internal nudge to build something of my own. Leading up to that, I was freelancing a lot and constantly frustrated by the lack of meaningful content in the marketing space. I wanted to create something that wasn’t just about selling but about shifting mindsets, educating, and empowering the youth. I didn’t know exactly how it would all unfold, but I knew it needed to start. So I took my last salary and used it to build what is now Millennial Mindset Media.
Sibusiso Nkosi: What is Millennial Mindset Media?
Marcia Monareng: Millennial Mindset Media started as a digital marketing agency and we’ve now pivoted into being a consumer education agency that uses strategic storytelling, animation, and digital content to tackle real-life issues in a way that is relatable and easy for the everyday person to understand. We tackle various social issues from gender-based violence to financial literacy. We create content that meets people where they are, especially in township and rural communities, and break down complex topics into accessible, relatable narratives. Our work is rooted in impact. Our goal is to use digital platforms to drive meaningful change. We’re here to make people think, feel, and act differently.
Sibusiso Nkosi: What are you hoping to achieve with Millennial Mindset Media?
Marcia Monareng: The goal is to change MINDSETS. I want to build a platform that makes education accessible, relevant, and empowering. I’m hoping to change how South Africans (and eventually the rest of the continent) consume information. I want big brands, government, and civil society to stop seeing education as a checkbox and start seeing it as important culture-shifting work. If we do this right, Millennial Mindset Media will become the go-to hub for creative, effective consumer education and a place where young creatives can find meaningful work.
Sibusiso Nkosi: What do you love most about Millennial Mindset Media?
Marcia Monareng: I love that Millennial Mindset Media is so inline with my purpose. I love that we get to create content that has the power to heal, teach, and shift perspectives. I love that our stories reflect our people, our slang, our pain, and our resilience. And I love that it’s a space where I can show up as my full self. I can show up as a creative, a strategic thinker, rooted, and purpose-driven. I love that I also get to empower talented young people to work with me on impactful campaigns and participate in the ever-evolving digital economy.
Sibusiso Nkosi: How can people get involved to support Millennial Mindset Media?
Marcia Monareng: There are so many ways. If you’re a brand or organization with a mandate to educate your audience, partner with us. If you’re an individual, follow our journey, share our content, and donate to the Millennial Mindset Foundation. And lastly, just believing in the work and helping us amplify it goes a long way.
