Boosting Township Economies: 4 Small Business Development Policies Needed

To stimulate economic growth and support small businesses in townships, the South African government should consider implementing policies that promote local procurement, entrepreneurship, and infrastructure development. This is one of the biggest task for the GNU in South Africa otherwise their tenure is going to be disappointing. Here are four potential policies that could make a significant impact:

  • Local Procurement Policy
Implementing a policy that requires public and private sectors to spend a percentage of their procurement in townships can inject much-needed capital into local economies. This approach would encourage large companies to partner with township-based suppliers, fostering economic growth and job creation .
  • Township Business Allocation Policy
Malls in townships should be required to allocate a certain percentage of rental space to local businesses before they even build. This policy would provide entrepreneurs with access to prime retail locations, increasing their visibility and competitiveness.
  • Excise Duty on Township Sales
Companies selling their brands in township tuckshops should be required to pay a small excise duty. This revenue can be used to fund local economic development initiatives, such as business training programs and infrastructure upgrades. This is radical, but is needed or we shut them out.
  • Infrastructure Development Policy
Logistic companies using township routes should be required to spend a percentage of their annual earnings on developing local infrastructure. Townships are not a dump site. Fix what you break.

By implementing these policies, the South African government can demonstrate its commitment to supporting small businesses in townships. By promoting local procurement, entrepreneurship, and infrastructure development, these policies can unlock economic growth and improve living standards in these communities.
